Importance of Self Care

One can never emphasise enough on the importance of self care, for one pays least attention to the self. If ever one is aware and does give importance to self care, most often it is sacrificed before all else. Once seen as just about taking care of your physical health, such as eating well and exercising, self care is now viewed in a much more holistic manner.

Essentially, self care refers to anything and everything that contributes to maintaining one’s physical, emotional and mental health and is an ongoing commitment to look after oneself. Self care is not just about taking a relaxing bubble bath or treating oneself to a spa day. It is a comprehensive approach towards nurturing oneself that includes practising healthy habits, managing stress levels, and prioritising one's mental and physical health. Self care is far from selfish. On the contrary, the more you take care of yourself, the more energy and focus you can offer others.

Why does self care matter?
In today's fast-paced and stressful world, self care is more important than ever. Neglecting self care can lead to burnout, anxiety, depression, and other health issues. It is essential to make it a priority in our lives and to take deliberate steps towards nurturing ourselves. Studies are increasingly positive about the effects of self-care on mood and psychological wellbeing.

One of the most critical aspects of self care is physical health. Taking care of our bodies is crucial for maintaining good health and longevity. This includes eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, and getting enough rest and sleep. Neglecting physical health can lead to a host of health issues, such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Mental health is another crucial aspect of self care. Taking care of our mental health includes managing stress levels, practising mindfulness and meditation, and seeking professional help when needed. Neglecting mental health can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.

Ways to up your self care: So you are making good choices in your life, indulging in hobbies and interests, making time to exercise weekly, follow good nutritional guidelines, spend time with family, and you have an active social life and also taking time to relax and unwind. Is that all there is to it? Not necessarily. The new self care is about much more than playing by the rules and looking good. It means that you make choices that work for you, whether or not they work for those around you. It means being authentic to who you are, not living up to other people’s standards. So self care becomes a process of constantly checking in with yourself and asking yourself how something makes you feel, and if it is really what YOU want. In conclusion, self care is crucial for maintaining good health and well-being. Neglecting self care can lead to a host of health issues, both physical and mental. It is essential to make self care a priority in our lives and take deliberate steps towards nurturing ourselves. By taking care of ourselves, we can lead happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
